As the oldest of the Kardashian kids, Kourtney has always been known as the healthy sister. She is often seen dishing out advice to her siblings on best foods to eat or ways to improve their diets, so when we were given the chance to sit down with Kourtney to discuss everything health and beauty related, we knew we were in for a treat. Kardashian has recently become the brand ambassador for Manuka Doctor, an organic honey-based beauty brand, which carries a line of cosmetics and skincare products. We caught up with Kourtney on her most recent trip to NYC and learned about her ideal food day, arguments with Kim,beauty advice from her Mom, her obsession with Ghee and why McDonald’s would be her last meal…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

If it was an ideal day, I would have Bishi, which is this Armenian breakfast that my grandma taught me how to make – Khloe and I make it together – and probably turkey bacon and some berries. I think I would still go healthy on lunch and have the chopped salad from the Beverly Hills Hotel. It’s top secret; it’s not on the menu. And then what would be dinner? MaybeMastro’s Steakhouse. I’d have the pretzel bread, the cold crab legs, cream spinach and the butter cake for dessert.

How do you personally practice beauty from the inside out?

I definitely feel like beauty is also what you put inside your body, so I really take a lot of care with what I eat, and what I feed my kids. I just think it’s really important as a lifestyle. I do have indulgences now and then, but for everyday I usually always eat a certain way and drink a lot of water. I drink green tea with Manuka honey, and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. I try to eat gluten-free and dairy-free, so it’s a mostly plant based diet. That’s my typical everyday.

The Manuka honey is part of what inspired you to become the new brand ambassador for the honey-based beauty line Manuka Doctor. Could you tell us more about that partnership?

Yes; I use the honey everyday, I have this avocado shake – it’s like having avocado pudding every morning – and I put Manuka Honey in that. For years I have been using it. Our production crew would use it when they were getting sick; they would just eat the honey on spoons. I was like “What are you guys doing?” And then I started using it too, especially once I had kids.

It’s known to help you when you’re getting sick. I put it up on my app – I have this “Good for You” glossary on my app, and it says why this superfood is great and lists all the benefits. I put up the Manuka Doctor Honey, which is the one I use and then they were looking for a brand ambassador (they have a skincare line), so it was a perfect fit.

What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?

In the morning, I wash my face with ApiClear Foaming Facial Cleanser, and then I do a toner like Manuka Doctor ApiClear Purifying Facial Toner, and a serum, and then I do sunscreen. And then at night I wash my face, and then I alternate nights. Probably once a week I’ll do the Manuka Doctor Illusionist Rapid Lift Mask or I’ll do it if I’m traveling, really tired and need a pick me up, or if I didn’t get a lot of rest that night or something. And then I’ll do a serum and the Brightening Facial Oil orReplenishing Facial Oil. I personally put the oil around my eyes, which my sister and I have been doing since high school – you just have to be careful to not get it in your eyes. For me, I just prefer that to an eye-cream; I like the texture of an oil.  My best friend was watching me getting ready for bed last night here in the hotel and she was like “What is that you’re putting on your eyes? It looks so soothing, I want it.” I don’t moisturize every night, but if my skin is dry then I’ll moisturize. I also put the extra oil on my hands as my final step because I feel like it’s important to not forget your hands. Khloe has the softest hands of anyone I’ve ever met. She puts sunscreen on them every time she gets in the car – she is just used to it, so she does it every time – and her hands are perfect.

Were you guys always careful about the sun growing up?

I wasn’t. Kim and I were not; we would lay out all the time. Khloe is more pale than us so I feel like she had to be more careful. Maybe that’s where her hand sunscreen obsession started. I keep sunscreen in my car but I always forget.

Growing up, did your Mom ever give you any beauty advice that stuck with you?

She always did. She taught us how to shave our legs; she taught us everything – the things you don’t even think about. Now that I have kids I realize that not everyone does that. Every time we got out of the bath she would put lotion or oil on our bodies. She would just teach us how to take care of ourselves. She would always cut our nails and show us how to groom. Her thing was always to use a really hot wash cloth after washing your face to make sure everything is off. We wear so much makeup because we are filming everyday, so I definitely do that.

What advice would you give young girls getting up in the morning and looking in the mirror?

I think less is more, especially when you are young – and at any age. I thinknatural beauty is so pretty. I think it’s fun to play and do a bright lip once in a while and have fun with it – or if you’re making a fashion statement with your makeup and it goes with your outfit, I think it is definitely fun to play but I think natural beauty is the best. And I’d say to take care of your skin, hair and body, so you don’t have to take a long time getting ready and putting tons of makeup on.

We as sisters started our website together so we get the sister thing! Do you guys ever fight or bicker?

I don’t even know; I feel like we are all so different. It’s really rare that Khloe and I bicker. I think if one of us is not in a good mood or something, the other will be like “Well, you’re in a great mood today,” and just be annoying to each other.

Kim and I…I feel like we will bicker. It’s not even bickering; we just have different ways of doing things. So even if it’s things with our kids, we’ll talk to each other about it. I’ll say, “I think I want to do this, this way,” and then she wants to do something that way. She will give little digs as if my way is wrong or something. I used to love confrontation – and I don’t love confrontation anymore – but sometimes it will really get to me and I’ll just go off. And it feels so good. It’s more just a yelling, quick thing to let it be known that I’m always right (laughs).

What’s your advice for new Moms?

I think just to trust your instincts. I think we all have a mother’s instinct when we have kids, so just trust it and stay calm. I remember when I was pregnant with Mason, my mom would always be like, “Why isn’t the room painted? Where is the crib? Where is this or that…” And I was like, “People used to have babies in caves; it’s going to be okay.”

Don’t worry if your diaper bag isn’t perfectly packed with all the things you need. As time went on, I started to just leave the house without it. I would bring the essentials or just throw a couple things in my purse instead of this huge thing, with blankets and extra sweaters. I was like “Let’s just live life and not carry a million things around.” I think it’s about staying calm and trusting your instincts.

Do you guys give each other’s kids advice?

I don’t know; it’s nice to see the way they interact with each other and how they all bring different things into their lives with their different personalities. I feel like Khloe is definitely the fun, playful aunt, and Kylie has about a million pets, so they love to go play with her pets. They all just bring something different into their lives, which is nice to see. But I don’t really see them giving them advice…yet.

What would you last meal be and who would it be with?

McDonald’s french fries, and a McDonald’s vanilla milkshake. I think it would just be with my kids.

In the last year is there a challenge that you were really proud to have overcome?

I think there has just generally been a lot of change in our family in the last year, and I think it was about just staying positive. I feel like we are all really, really good at staying positive, focusing on the good, and just turning any situation that people would think of as negative as something that is helping us grow, or realizing that it’s something that is in your life for a reason, and just making the best of it. Because what else can you do? It’s better than just sitting there crying all day.

In beauty and wellness, what is the new potato right now?

Ghee. I started doing it through this Ayurvedic woman that I meet with. I just did a post on my app about it and the benefits of ghee. I have been eating it for years because my grandmother made it, not even knowing what it was. Now I drink it every morning; I have one teaspoon. You melt it and you drink it first thing in the morning, and then you can’t eat or drink anything for twenty minutes after. It has to be the first thing in your stomach.
